Male figure (Sardinian shepherd), 1966
warp and weft in wool, vertical loom weaving

Starting from 1960 Nivola designs sketches for tapestries, to be made in Sardinia, in Sarule, a town with a great tradition in the field of weaving. After the war, Europe and the United States witnessed a revival of the art of tapestry, with the help of a good number of artists.

Nivola knows Le Corbusier’s theory of the tapestry as a “muralnomad” “portable” wall painting suitable for the often nomadic life of modern man. The three-dimensional sculpture is brought back onto the two-dimensional plane thanks to the sharp contrast of whites and blacks, in a way not unlike graffiti.
