Starting from 1974 Nivola returned to painting with a series of paintings
that revisit the American urban landscape, especially New York (previous versions of the theme were from the early 1940s). They are works that capture the magical vitality and at the same time the nervous and chaotic quality of the city. “I am determined – he writes – to put everything I know and understand about the subject, the art of painting and the discipline of seeing into a series of paintings. It will be hard work, not joyful work but a sad, objective, truthful approach to a ruthless, realistic city “.
