On the Shoulder of Giants explores the dialogue between the art of Costantino Nivola and the Prehistory of Sardinia, weaving together archaic memories and modern visions. In the cultural climate of the postwar period, when artists around the world looked to Prehistory as a source of spiritual and cultural renewal, Nivola rediscovered  his native island and its extraordinary archaelogical heritage, placing it at the heart of his artistic practice. From Neolithic female figurines to menhirs, from sacred wells to Nuragic architecture, and up to the celebrated Giants of Mont’e Prama, these memories of the past resonate with the artist’s sandcasts, graffiti, and Great Mothers, revealing striking formal and symbolic affinities. This book, born of collaboration among art historians, archaeologists, and architects, takes the reader on a journey that intertwines the myth of origins, modernism, and Mediterranean identity.
