Behind the Seen captures the fruit of Mona Hatoum’s residency in Sardinia, where she collaborated with local artisans to create a series of new works for an exhibition at the Museo Nivola. The title plays on the phonetic proximity between “seen” and “scene” – what we look at and the framework that stages it. Featuring these new pieces alongside earlier works, this catalogue highlights themes that have long been central to the artist’s practice, such as the body, systems of control, and the precariousness of our world.
